The total calories burned and the metabolic benefits achieved will be very similar regardless of the order. Some research suggests that performing cardio after lifting might slightly increase fat oxidation because weight training depletes glycogen stores first, theoretically forcing your body to tap into fat for fuel during the subsequent cardio. This is the ideal approach if your schedule allows. Dedicate specific days to strength training and others to cardio. For example: Strength on Monday, Wednesday, Friday, and cardio on Tuesday and Thursday. This provides ample time (at least 24 hours) for the conflicting molecular signals to return to baseline and for your body to recover, allowing you to bring maximal intensity to every single session.

Option 2: Two-a-Days
If you're an advanced trainee or have a flexible schedule, you can perform two sessions on the same day. The key is to separate them by at least 6-8 hours. A common protocol is to perform your higher-skill or higher-intensity workout in the morning (e.g., your cardio session if you're a runner, or your lifting session if you're a lifter) and the other session in the afternoon or evening. This allows for significant recovery and nutrient replenishment between bouts.

If you must combine them into one session, and strength is your priority, the *type* of cardio you do matters. After a heavy lifting session, opt for 20-30 minutes of Low-Intensity, Steady-State (LISS) cardio.
